PHASE I : Phase
I (Early Guidance Treatment) usually involves jaw growth modification
(by use of expanders, head gears, and other appliances) and severe
tooth problems. Early guidance is usually started between 6-11
years of age with a treatment time of approximately one year.
After Phase I treatment, Dr. Girgis will
see patients on a regular basis (2-3 times a year) to monitor
the eruption of the permanent teeth. Phase I treatment often shortens
the length and complexity of Phase II (braces) treatment. It can
also help prevent the need for permanent tooth removal and the
impaction of permanent teeth as they erupt.
PHASE II: Phase
II treatment (braces) usually consists of upper and lower braces
when permanent teeth have come in but are not properly aligned.
Phase II usually begins about 11-13 years of age. An average
treatment time is approximately 2 years, possibly less if the
patient has had Phase I treatment.
